Confirming onion link?

I new to this, but I’ve been taking my time to understand the process… read the bible, watched a number of tutorials from trusted sources, etc.

I’ve been told that when obtaining an onion link from a directory (eg dark fail), one must very the link to prevent fishing & other potential security risks. But how is this done?

If someone obtains an onion link from dark fail or another directory, how does that person verify the link is accurate and secure?
